Metals

Platinum

Platinum is a white/silver-toned metal known for its rarity, strength and durability. Platinum's natural white color complements diamonds very well keeping them colourless and bright.

It's a popular and more preferred choice for diamond jewellery as it doesn't tarnish easily like other metals and can hold diamonds securely in place for long term use.

For jewellery, the most common quality grade of platinum used is ‘950’, this means 95% platinum, 5% mixed metals i.e rhodium, copper, palladium etc.

White Gold

White gold is a similar looking metal to platinum, and supports a diamond to stay colourless and brilliant. It's different properties to platinum, it is white coloured gold, so still gold at the end of the day, therefore softer overall in the form of jewellery, and less dense in comparison to platinum.

When crafting, it’s often alloyed with metals like palladium and other mixes, then coated with rhodium to enhance its whiteness.

Rhodium can fade with time as you use it daily, small off-white or yellow patches will be visible. It’s reversible and rhodium can be applied again bringing back its shine.

Daily wear and tear such as use of cream, handwash, sanitisers, surfaces, door handles etc, all contribute to the wearing away of rhodium coating.

Yellow Gold

Yellow gold is one of the original jewellery metals. It’s made by combining pure gold with other metals such as copper and zinc to enhance its strength and durability while preserving its warm, golden color.

It is available in many purity options, such as 9k, 14k, 18k etc. Different regions provide certain karats only based on supply and demand factors.

The higher gold content you have, i.e 22k jewellery, the softer and less durable the jewellery is, and richer the colour, this is subject to each one's preferences.

The lower the gold content, i.e 9k jewellery, the tougher it is, less rich colour and can tarnish a little faster than others as it’s more mixed alloys than gold in the metal contents.

For diamond and gemstone jewellery we recommend going for 18k gold (white, rose or yellow), we recommend this karat as it is a balance between more gold content, so less tarnishing, and balance of strength and durability, and the colours will complement the diamonds better than higher or lower karats. Lower karats become dull faster. Higher karats are too soft to hold diamonds intact and for long.

Rose Gold

Rose gold is a warm rosy-pink colour with a warm sunset hue. Rose gold offers a modern twist on traditional yellow gold.

Rose gold is a metal alloy made by mixing pure gold with copper, and a little bit of silver or zinc to keep the pink/rose colour and not let it get too red. The copper gives it the pink or reddish tint that defines its look.
